Bobble stitch

This is a knitting pattern which describes how to knit bobbles into your knitted fabric. You can vary where you add the bobbles to create different patterns. The example in the picture has a bobble every fourth stitch, and every fourth row. The bobbles are spaced on the rows so that they line up diagonally on the knitted fabric.

The bobbles can be made bigger or smaller quite easily, as follows.

To knit a three stitch bobble within a stocking stitch pattern:

On the right side row:

1. Knit the stitch, but do not take the stitch off the holding (left hand) needle

2. Take the yarn forwards and purl the same stitch. Do not take the stitch off the holding needle.

3. Take the yarn backwards and knit the same stitch. This time take the stitch off the holding needle.

On the wrong side row:

For every bobble you have created using the above three steps, purl those three stitches together as you work along the row.

To knit a four stitch bobble within a stocking stitch pattern:

On the right side row:

1. Knit the stitch, but do not take the stitch off the holding (left hand) needle

2. Take the yarn forwards and purl the same stitch. Do not take the stitch off the holding needle.

3. Take the yarn backwards and knit the same stitch. Do not take the stitch off the holding needle.

4. Take the yarn forwards and purl the same stitch. This time take the stitch off the holding needle.

On the wrong side row:

For every bobble you have created using the above four steps, purl those four stitches together as you work along the row.

To knit a five stitch bobble within a stocking stitch pattern:

On the right side row:

1. Knit the stitch, but do not take the stitch off the holding (left hand) needle

2. Take the yarn forwards and purl the same stitch. Do not take the stitch off the holding needle.

3. Take the yarn backwards and knit the same stitch. Do not take the stitch off the holding needle.

4. Take the yarn forwards and purl the same stitch. Do not take the stitch off the holding needle.

5. Take the yarn backwards and knit the same stitch. This time take the stitch off the holding needle.

On the wrong side row:

For every bobble you have created using the above five steps, purl those five stitches together as you work along the row.
